While RAID 5 isnt exactly the Holy Grail of desktop NAS, it is a very attractive option that combines the speed of striped RAID 0 and sufficient data protection without a humongous loss of storage capacity (as with RAID 1) in the trade. Thats what makes Western Digitals ShareSpace NAS array an attractive option. Still youll need to dig a little deeper to ferret out all that makes up ShareSpace and whether or not its right for you. The box is available with either two or four of Western Digitals 1TB Caviar Green drives (WD10000CSRTL). With two drives, you get RAID 0 while four drives nets you RAID 5 (the unit is capable of supporting RAID 0, RAID 1 or RAID 5) as the standard configuration. The box measures about 7. 7 inches high by 8 inches long and 6 inches wide. It will cost you $700 for the two-drive system or $1,000 for the four-drive model at MSRP pricing and thats not as bad as it sounds. The drives themselves have an MSRP of $220, making the 4-drive unit the better buy of the two (at least until retail pricing gets hold of the ShareSpace). Shipped as RAID 0, the 2TB model gives you an easy upgrade path (just slip in the extra drives) without losing your current data. The green drives inside provide solutions to one of the most common problems encountered when piling hard disks in a box: heat saturation. These drives run cool by using nearly 40% less power than a standard hard disk. Thats a bonus by itself, but lower power means less heat to dissipate and that allows Western Digital to use slow-speed, nearly silent, fans to provide effective cooling rather than the little hurricanes that would typically be required to move hotter air out of the box. Installation is about as simple as it gets: Just run the included CD. You can also elect to install MioNet remote access software or WDs Anywhere Backup application if you so desire. Its all pretty standard and follow-along. Even accessing the ShareSpace and its options from your browser is made transcendentally simple by the use of action icons that guide you through the tasks. Una compañía de Emiratos Árabes Unidos (EAU) ha anunciado un proyecto para la construcción de la pantalla más grande del mundo, que llevará incorporada tecnología LED, y que ocupará la fachada de una torre comercial. La compañía Tameer Holding ha explicado en un comunicado que la pantalla -compuesta de diodos luminosos LED-, tendrá una altura de 33 plantas y estará ubicada en Dubailand, una zona turística y de recreo en las afueras de la localidad emiratí de Dubai. La pantalla podrá ser vista a una distancia de un kilómetro y medio, según la nota. We are resuming our RAID controller reviews with the 3Ware 9650SE-16ML model to show our respect to the company that has undergone a lot of changes recently. Particularly, it has been devoured by AMCC. The company transformed and its products changed, too. They would acquire an external cache memory module but then would lose it again. Keeping up with the times, 3Ware products acquired SATA2 support, transitioned to the PCI Express bus, began to work with the now-fashionable RAID6. The outcome of all this is the 3Ware 9650SE series. One controller from this series will be discussed in this review. Closer Look at AMCC 3Ware 9650SE-16MLNot a senior model in the series. The 9650SE-16ML controller has 16 ports for hard disks (four multilane connectors each of which supports up to four devices) and 256 megabytes of DDR2-533 SDRAM. The senior model is called 9650SE-24MB and it has 24 ports and 512 megabytes of memory. And if you need low-profile controllers, you’ll find them in this series too, but they support no more than eight ports. The controllers all support the PCI Express interface, but the junior model with two ports is equipped with PCI Express x1, the 4- and 8-port models with PCI Express x4, and the senior models support PCI Express x8. Of course, the senior models are compatible with the narrower buses. Every version, except for the junior 9650SE-2LP, supports a battery module for cache memory. Besides the controller, the box contains a standard selection of accessories: a user manual, a disc with drivers, and four interface cables. An AMCC Power PC 405CR chip is the controller’s processor. 3Ware doesn’t specify its frequency but it must be 266MHz judging by the marking. Two eight-channel SATA-II chips Marvell 88SX6081-BCZ1 are responsible for the disks. This is a noteworthy change – 3Ware used to employ its own chips before. The controller supports a long list of operating systems including 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows 2003/XP/2000, Red Hat Linux, SuSE Linux, Fedora Linux, Linux cores 2. 4 and 2. 6, FreeBSD.
